Kevin has had quite a week already. It actually started on Friday night at the scrimmage against Irving. One of his players went down. It was his knee and they pulled him from the game and had him on the trainer table for the rest of the game. His knee was packed with ice. On Monday they found out he tore his ACL and LCL, both ligaments in his knee. The doctor said he's done (and he's a senior), but the player and Kevin think otherwise. It will need surgery, regardless.
On Monday, he's just coming home at 9:45. He tells me that he won't be there for long. He has to go to the hospital because one of his JV players got hit at practice and may be paralyzed. Immediately I'm thinking, OMG!! He's frantically looking for the address to the hospital and making phone calls to try to find out the status of this player because he had to continue working after the ambulance took him. He leaves for the hospital about 9:00. Now, for those of you in the Dallas area, you know that Parkland Hospital is not in a "nice part of town". He parks in the $3.00 parking lot because that is all they have. He gets there shortly after the head coach does and they are in the emergency waiting area together. In comes this pregnant woman and people are carrying her...they start yelling BABY, BABY! One guy takes his shirt off to catch the baby as it's coming out. There was no pushing or anything. The baby literally fell out! So they got to witness a baby being born right there in the hall. I'm a little envious because I pushed for two hours, remember! So, Kevin is ready to come home at around 11:30. He goes to his truck and pulls up to the stand with the guy in it and the guy says, "Sir, that will be $3.00." Kevin looks down and has realized that he left his wallet at the school. He has no money with him and the head coach had already left right before him, so he has no way to even borrow money. Kevin explains that he came right after work and that he is a coach and was coming to see one of his players that was brought to the hospital by ambulance. The guy says, "Sir, I cannot let you leave without paying." He cannot back up because there are little spikes that prevent you from doing that so he will be sitting there until he comes up with $3.00. He remembers he has a bag of change in his car. It is all PENNIES! He starts to count pennies. As he's counting this car pulls up behind him and starts honking. The guy at the gate tells them to hold on a second. They don't listen and continue to honk. Kevin said by this time he had counted about $2.50. The person behind is still honking and Kevin finally loses it! He gets out of his truck, turns around and points at them. After screaming a few things that I can't put on the blog, he gets back in his truck. He said the guy was scared out of his mind and finally quit honking. The guy in the stand said, "Umm, sir, I think he understands." Kevin said he grabbed a wad of pennies, from the pile, slammed it down on the desk inside the stand and the guy said, "Sir, you're good to go." He got home about midnight.
On Tuesday he sends me a text that one of his freshman players was just careflighted to the hospital with a throat injury. Something hit him in the throat and he was unable to breathe. Kevin pulled him to the side and was holding him up because he was getting weak from not being able to get any air. Kevin called the trainer over and she looked at him and he still couldn't breathe. Kevin says they need to call 911 because this is not normal and hasn't gotten any better within a few minutes. The ambulance comes and checks the boy out and they say he needs to be careflighted. They had to stick a tube down his throat so that he could breathe. Kevin said once that ordeal was done, he just cried. He was scared to death.
So, what else can happen?? It's only Wednesday.
The boy from Monday is doing much better. He just doesn't have feeling in his right arm and it's is because of a VERY pinched nerve in his shoulder area. Multiply a normal pinched nerve times 10. He will eventually have feeling again.
The boy from yesterday will have to be held in the hospital a minimum of 36 hours but he will also recover normally.
I'm know God was watching out for these kids and we are glad they are going to be ok.
I just hope my husband makes it through the rest of the week without anything else traumatic.
